What does MUTCD stand for?

The Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices is a manual that was written in 1935 to standardize road signage and make it uniform from state to state. Signage evolved through a combination of experiment, testing and much research. Through the year’s traffic sign sizes have changed, signs have been added, new reflective technologies have made signs much brighter and last longer. To learn more checkout the MUTCD website

How long will my traffic sign last?

The lifespan of your sign depends on the type of reflective sheeting that is used:

  • Engineer Grade Signs 7 years BRIGHT
  • High Intensity Prismatic Signs 10 years BRIGHTER
  • Diamond Grade Cubed signs 12 years BRIGHTEST

How deep should I pound my sign post?

Sign posts should be pounded 18” to 42” into the ground depending on the length of post, soil conditions, and how deep the frost line is in your area. Since burial guidelines vary from state to state we recommend reaching out to your local road department for their recommendation.

What type of Reflective Sheeting do you use?

Dornbos Sign & Safety has been using 3M Matched Component Products for over 60 years. Most signs available on our site are offered in a variety of reflective materials such as Engineer Grade Prismatic, High Intensity Prismatic, and Diamond Grade. Traffic signs meant for use on public roads must be High Intensity Prismatic or Diamond Grade reflective in order to meet MUTCD requirements for reflectivity.

What liability do I have if my sign is fading and no longer reflective?

If your parking lot or road is “Open to Public Travel” your signs must follow the MUTCD standards for reflectivity. Roads that are built or maintained privately may not need to follow these guidelines. Installing the proper reflective signs is the best way to protect yourself from legal action.
